Recently, we worked with a student named Claire, an eighth grader preparing for a mock trial in her history class. The assignment? Act as the prosecution and argue that Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador, was guilty of genocide.

This was a complex, high-stakes assignment requiring Claire to:

1️⃣ Research the fall of the Inca Empire

2️⃣ Write an opening statement and build a case

3️⃣ Prepare for cross-examination by anticipating tough defense arguments

Claire had already done her research and drafted her statement. But when it came to the final step—preparing for the back-and-forth debate—she felt stuck.

She wasn’t sure how to predict the defense’s counterarguments or how to deliver strong rebuttals on the spot. That’s when we showed her a powerful AI study technique: using ChatGPT as a debate coach.

Using AI as a Mock Trial Prep Coach

Instead of leaving Claire to figure things out alone, we taught her how to turn ChatGPT into a realistic debate opponent.

We started with this simple prompt:

💬 “You are the defense attorney in a mock trial about Francisco Pizarro. Ask me 10 tough questions that I should be prepared to answer.”

Within seconds, AI generated sharp, thought-provoking counterarguments—the kind her classmates might challenge her with.

Here are a few examples:

The term genocide wasn’t even defined until the 20th century. How can you apply a modern law to a historical figure?

Genocide requires intent. Isn’t it true that Pizarro’s main goal was wealth and power, not destruction?

How do you prove Pizarro’s direct responsibility for what happened, rather than blaming the broader Spanish conquest?

Suddenly, Claire had a roadmap for her rebuttals—and a way to practice answering difficult questions before stepping in front of her class.

The Big “Aha” Moment

Claire’s biggest fear was freezing up during the trial. After using AI to simulate real debate questions, she told me:

🔹 “Now I know what to expect. I don’t have to guess what the defense might say—I can actually prepare!”

She practiced answering each AI-generated question out loud, refining her arguments and spotting weak points.

By the time the actual trial took place, Claire was calm, confident, and prepared. She knew how to counter misleading arguments, structure persuasive responses, and engage in critical debate.

Why This Matters for Students

This wasn’t just about one history assignment—it was about building critical thinking, public speaking, and structured argumentation skills that will serve students for life.

Why AI-powered debate prep works:

Develops critical thinking – Students learn to analyze both sides of an issue, not just memorize facts.

Boosts confidence – Practicing tough questions in advance makes students feel prepared, not panicked.

Strengthens real-world skills – Argumentation, reasoning, and persuasion are invaluable beyond the classroom.

When used correctly, AI isn’t a shortcut—it’s a tool that helps students think more deeply and engage with learning in a powerful way.

The future of learning is here. Let’s make sure your child is ready for it.

AI is rapidly changing education, and parents are grappling with what that means for their children’s learning. If you’re curious about AI, you may be wondering how it can be used to support schoolwork in a meaningful way. If you know your child is already using AI, you may be concerned about whether they’re using it responsibly.

The good news? AI can be an incredible study tool, especially for writing. When used correctly, it helps students analyze their own work, refine arguments, and improve clarity—all without replacing their critical thinking.

In this post, I’ll walk through how AI can be used as a personal writing coach, breaking down an essay step by step. If you want your child to learn how to use AI ethically and effectively for school, check out our self-paced AI study course.

Case Study: How AI Can Help with an Essay

Let’s take a common scenario: A middle school student is assigned a literary analysis essay but struggles to organize their thoughts and apply the grading rubric effectively.

Where AI Can Help:

  • Helping students understand what makes an essay strong

  • Guiding them in self-scoring their work based on their teacher’s rubric

  • Providing specific, constructive feedback on argument clarity and structure

  • Unlike a tutor, AI is available anytime to give structured feedback. But the key is knowing how to prompt it for useful, ethical guidance.

Step-by-Step: How to Use AI as a Writing Coach

Here’s a structured approach students can use to get the most out of AI, which we covered in our recent webinar:

Step 1: Upload the Teacher’s Rubric into ChatGPT

  • The student pastes the essay prompt and grading rubric into ChatGPT.

  • This gives AI the necessary context to evaluate the essay properly.

Step 2: Assign ChatGPT a "Teacher" Persona

  • Instead of asking AI, "Is this a good essay?", students can say:

"You are an 8th grade English teacher grading this essay based on the rubric provided. What score would you give and why?"

  • This makes AI simulate real teacher feedback, rather than giving generic responses.

Step 3: Use AI to Self-Score & Improve the Essay

  • AI provides detailed feedback, scoring different sections (introduction, argument, evidence, etc.).

  • Instead of rewriting, AI highlights where the student needs stronger evidence or clearer reasoning.

  • The student then revises their own work, rather than copying AI-generated text.

This method turns AI into a powerful self-editing tool, keeping students engaged in their own learning.

The Do’s & Don’ts of AI for Writing

  • DON’T copy and paste AI-generated essays—this prevents real learning.

  • DO use AI for constructive feedback and idea refinement.

  • DON’T assume AI is always right—students must fact-check and think critically.

  • DO use AI to simulate teacher feedback and self-score assignments.

When used correctly, AI builds stronger writers by making feedback more immediate and accessible.

Why AI Literacy is Now Essential for Students

AI isn’t a passing trend—it’s becoming a key part of education and the workforce. So where do you go from here?
